Abstract. 
The results of numerical simulation of the dynamics of the 
electromagnetic field in media, dielectric and magnetic permeability of which 
can take negative values, are presented in the paper. It is shown that in some 
cases, models based on the average characteristics of the medium, which have no 
dependence on time (without the frequency dispersion), could violate the 
principle of causality and energy conservation law.
