Abstract. A method for estimating the characteristics of the effective scattering area of complex objects is considered, which is based on the creation of three-dimensional models of objects and subsequent computer modeling of their secondary radiation. The practical implementation of the method is presented on the example of estimating the characteristics of the effective scattering area of one of the common types of small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle in the S-frequency range. The distinctive features of the proposed method are: considering the dielectric properties of object materials during electrodynamic modeling, the use of wavelet filtering in processing experimental data in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, as well as the stage of verifying the convergence of modeling results, in the sense of specified criteria, with data from control natural experiments. As a result of the research, it was found that for the selected type of small-sized unmanned aerial vehicle, the laws of experimental distributions of the effective scattering area according to the results of modeling and control field experiments coincided in 90 % of cases. The median values of the effective scattering area matched with an accuracy of at least 3 dB. Based on the theory of similarity and modeling, the proposed approach allows us to proceed to the development and creation of a series of models of complex objects with signs of similarity. At the same time, it is possible to obtain a large amount of statistical data on the patterns of their secondary radiation without conducting field experiments, which entail large economic and organizational costs.
Key words: method, secondary radiation of radio waves, radar system, effective scattering area, unmanned aerial vehicle, computer simulation, experimental distribution law, median value, agreement criterion
