Abstract. The active development of small-sized mobile objects and mobile radio engineering systems has recently highlighted the problem of creating compact broadband and multi-band omnidirectional antennas. The article proposes a new compact dual-band omnidirectional antenna with horizontal polarization, which is a multilayer structure of three printed circuit boards. To reduce the size of the antenna, a high-impedance surface or EBG (Electomagnetic Band Gap) is used instead of a solid screen in its design structure. As a result of electrodynamic modeling, the main characteristics of the proposed antenna are calculated. The article also presents the results of a study of the influence of the main geometric parameters of a high-impedance surface on the VSWR, gain, and antenna radiation pattern. It was found that the use of a high-impedance surface instead of a screen made it possible to reduce the distance between the shielding surface and the board with radiating elements by 18% without deterioration of the VSWR. As a result of calculations, it was determined that the antenna operates in two frequency ranges, the relative width of which, according to the VSWR level of 2, is 45.4 and 17.8%. This allows the antenna to be used for various tasks, for example, to provide wireless data transmission and mobile communications in the 2-5G bands.

Key words: omnidirectional antenna, multilayer antenna, dual-band antenna, horizontal polarization, antenna size reduction, high-impedance surface, EBG structure, mushroom element.
