Abstract. The photocytotoxicity and dark toxicity of the Yb complex of 2,4-di(α-methoxyethyl)deuteroporphyrin IX (Yb-DMDP) were studied to determine the prospects for its further application in biomedical photonics. The parameters of Yb-DMDP intrinsic cytotoxicity (dark) and photocytotoxicity were determined using the MTT assay. For dark cytotoxicity, the 50% survival rate of cancer cells (IC50) was 10−5.15 mol/L for Skov-3 cells, and for phototoxicity, the IC50 was 10−5.53 mol/L. Thus, it has been shown that the Yb-DMDP compound has moderate intrinsic (dark) toxicity and insignificant photocytotoxicity compared to the drug «Photoditazine», which is widely used in clinical practice. Low photocytotoxicity will allow the Yb-DMDP effective use in the processes of IR-luminescent diagnostics of tumors, and moderate dark cytotoxicity, apparently, can make it possible to use it in antimicrobial therapy without photoexcitation.
Key words: photocytotoxicity, dark cytotoxicity, ytterbium porphyrin complex, MTT assay, cell irradiation stand, photosensitizers, photodynamic effect.
