1-MA, 40-KV AIR INSULATED LINEAR TRANSFORMER DRIVER STAGE

Abstract. In the report we present the design and test results of the new linear transformer driver (LTD) stage, that operates at 40 kV charge voltage without of transformer oil or compressed gas. It consists of 120 capacitors (40 kV, 100 nF) and 40 multi-channel, multi-gap switches. The dimensions of the stage are 2.8 m × 2.8 m, the length is 22 cm. It stores 9.6 kJ of energy and is able to deliver ~1 MA current pulse with a rise time of ~200 ns into the ~20 mOhm matched load. This LTD stage demonstrates the possibility to simplify the design and operation of high-power LTD generators by reducing the charging voltage and using dry air at atmospheric pressure for insulation inside the stage and the switches.
