Abstract. General methodological approaches in radiometric calibration of radar images of the test point and distributed targets with known scattering properties (radar cross section and normalized radar cross section) acquired by synthetic aperture radar are discussed in the paper. The idea of radiometric calibration of radar images is presented. Mathematical description of the basics of the formation images containing point and distributed test targets is provided. An impact of radar system transfer function in the calibration procedure is analyzed. Taking into account the features mentioned, the prospective of the estimating the cross section of the test point targets and the normalized radar cross section of the distributed targets is considered. Methodological recommendations for the radiometric calibration of synthetic aperture radar images containing various reference targets with known scattering properties are presented.
