Abstract. Lenses of non-uniform dielectric are used in both optical and radio bands. Compared with homogeneous lenses, they have an additional degree of freedom - the gradient of the refractive index of the dielectric. However, the study of aberrations in such lenses when the source is shifted out of focus is complicated due to the curved shape of the rays. The formula for the eikonal on the output surface of a cylindrical gradient lens with a one-dimensional gradient of the refractive index when the source is displaced from the focus in the form of decomposition of the eikonal in the  series by the powers of values of longitudinal and transverse displacement, including members of the first and second order of smallness is derived. The accuracy of the obtained formula for eikonal in a gradient lens is estimated.

Key words: gradient lenses, rays, eikonal.
