Abstract. An indicator of nonlinear distortion of signals is proposed, which is a three-component vector and makes it possible to increase the informative value of distortion estimation by presenting information about distortions simultaneously in the energy and frequency domains. The method of determining the distortion index mainly boils down to the mathematical processing of the results of spectral analysis of signals enriched with distortion products, including the calculation of the average relative level of the harmonics that appeared. Examples of the application of the proposed approach are considered, from the point of view of demonstrating its effectiveness for assessing the degree of difference between various distorted signals. The main factors influencing the estimation error of the average relative harmonic level are revealed.

Key words: nonlinear distortion, harmonics, vector distortion index, spectrum, measurement error.
