Abstract. The paper is devoted to the problem of calculating the attenuation factor taking into account the backscattering of radio waves from the terrain. It is found that the distance dependences of the backscattering attenuation factor correspond to the same field attenuation curves in the forward direction both for a flat earth model and for an arbitrary terrain profile. It is shown that it is not necessary to solve the backscattering problem for modeling reflections from the terrain at VHF repeatedly.

Key words: radio wave propagation, backscattering from the terrain, parabolic equation method, radar equation.
