Abstract. At implementing 5G NR mobile communication networks in the millimeter wave range, the use of microwave photonic (MWP) technologies is promising for the embodiment of the analog part of the base stations antenna systems. The MWP beamforming devices (BFD) of phased array antennas have better technical and economical characteristics compared to fully microwave solutions. The article presents two models of MWP beamforming devices developed in the specialized microwave CAD AWR DE. The BFD are implemented on the basis of electrical equivalent schemes of optical modules (electro-optical modulator, delay lines on Bragg gratings, etc.), in which the formation of the required amplitude-phase field distributions in the antenna array aperture is realized on the basis of optical delay lines. An end-to-end nonlinear simulation of BFD, in which signals in the microwave and optical ranges are simultaneously analyzed in the models, is performed. The amplitude-phase distributions of the signals on the BFD antenna ports are determined, the radiation patterns of linear equidistant phased array antennas of isotropic emitters are calculated. It is shown that the second scheme of the MWP beamforming devices has the best technical characteristics. For this scheme, radiation patterns were also calculated for the case of an antenna array consisting of four-element clusters of broadband patch emitters with switchable radiation polarization.
