Abstract. The article is devoted to a strict exposition of the Doppler effect based on the basic postulates of the modern physical picture of the world. We show the difference in the description of the Doppler effect for elastic waves and for electromagnetic waves. For the case of electromagnetic waves in radar, a time scaling coefficient is obtained, that takes into account relativistic time deceleration and is a multivalued function of the modulus and angle of the direction of the reflecting object velocity. A representation of a reflected signal of arbitrary shape and its spectrum based on time scaling is proposed and analyzed.
Key words: Doppler effect, relativistic time deceleration, time scale factor, spectrum of reflected signal with arbitrary waveform
