Abstract

Using numerical modeling and the Kirchhoff approximation, the influence of the anisotropy of the average permittivity of a perforated structure in the form of a hexagonal array of round holes in a solid dielectric on the radiation characteristics of an antenna based on a spherical perforated Luneburg lens was studied for two variants of the linear polarization of the feed. It was shown that when the feeds are located in a plane orthogonal to the holes and the polarization of their electric field is orthogonal to the holes, the anisotropy does not affect the radiation characteristics of the lens antenna. With a different polarization or a different arrangement of feeds, the anisotropy limits the maximum value of the electrical diameter of the lens at a given level of the surface utilization factor. An estimate of such a limitation is given for the location of the feeds of the feeds in the plane orthogonal to the holes.
